Hypertension: 8 Weeks to Control

A Health IT Director’s Journey with Florence

Marshall
  • 30mmHg (21%) drop in systolic BP from 149 to 112
  • 11mmHg reduction in diastolic BP from 90 to 79
  • Stage 2 hypertension reversed to normal within 2 months

“I think all clinicians should consider using Florence for their HTN and pre-HTN patients.”

From Assumptions to Action

Thanks to participating in one of three Florence programs at Marshall Medical, Lēya Eddy, a 56-year-old Director of Informatics, successfully brought her Stage 2 hypertension under control in just a few weeks.

Although Lēya was aware of her family history of hypertension, she had stopped checking her blood pressure regularly as “it seemed fine”. Without any symptoms she assumed elevated numbers at the clinic were “just white coat syndrome”.

That changed when her new PCP encouraged to her to start monitoring her blood pressure regularly at home and she asked to be enrolled on Florence because she “appreciated Florence would prompt her to do what the doctor advised.”

An active wife, mother and grandmother who exercises regularly and prioritizes clean eating, Lēya “didn’t think it would show anything.”  But Florence revealed her average BP in April 2025 was 142/90 confirming Stage 2 hypertension.

“By using Florence, I became aware that my BP wasn’t getting any better, and that prompted me to follow up with my PCP.”

Guided Support, Real Results

Florence’s 6-month hypertension protocol prompted Lēya to

  • Send BP readings twice a week
  • Track medication adherence
  • Receive weekly education and encouragement.

She was soon started on a medication that suited her and with support from Florence, by June 2025, Lēya’s systolic BP dropped 149 to 112, and her diastolic from 90 to 79, bringing her blood pressure into the normal range.

Lēya credits Florence’s “friendly reminders” for helping her to take her medication consistently and getting into the habit of submitting regular readings, even if she tells Florence she’ll “send them when she’s back from work”.

A New Understanding

This experience is new for Lēya, but she’s already seeing the benefits of better habits and greater awareness. Florence’s tips have helped her understand the role of daily choices, like cutting salt, maintaining exercise, and taking her meds regularly, in keeping her blood pressure in check.

Her advice is clear: “Follow Florence’s prompts. She’ll guide you correctly.”

Why This Matters for Primary Care & Value-Based Care

Lēya’s story is a powerful reminder: even informed, health-literate patients can go undiagnosed without structured follow-up and support.

Florence filled that gap with:

  • Scalable, automated outreach
  • Clinician-controlled protocols
  • High patient engagement

The result?

Faster time to control, reduced risk, and a better patient experience – without burdening clinic staff.
